for 1984-2001 Jeep XJ Cherokees and 1993-1998 Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokees These skids are made from 3/16" thick steel on the bottom and sides, are powder coated, and are completely bolt-on. They are designed to work with virtually any hitch. However, if you don't already have a hitch XJ owners will need to provide the nut plates that fit inside the chassis. You can get them from your friendly Jeep dealer. On 1997-2001 model XJ's you'll only need the driver's side nut plate. Most ZJ's have the necessary bolts already installed. Please Note the following:  There is a difference between the 1984-1996 XJ model and the 1997-2001 XJ model. The 1984-1996 XJ models have a steel gas tank. These skid plates were recently redesigned to make them easier to ship, install, and to fit better...especially when installing it with a hitch. These skid plates were also recently redesigned to make them easier to ship, install, and to fit better. In this photo you can see how the passenger side mounting bracket is attached. The mounting brackets can be moved to the inside of the skid plate if clearance is needed for installation with a narrow hitch. This photo shows the driver's side and, again, the bracket can be moved to the inside of the main skid plate if clearance is an issue with a hitch installation.
